Tropical Storm poses danger on Caribbean
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued a warning, stating that the swells generated by Jerry are likely to create life-threatening surf conditions and rip currents, particularly along coastal regions. The dangerous conditions are anticipated to spread across the Greater Antilles over the next two nights, with impacts expected to worsen.
In addition to the hazardous surf conditions, the storm is bringing heavy rainfall to areas including the Leeward Islands, British and U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. This could lead to flash flooding, especially in urban areas and steep terrains.
Rainfall projections for Friday include up to 10-15 cm (4-6 inches) across Barbuda, with 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) forecast for other parts of the Leeward and Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico could see up to 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) of rain, with isolated spots receiving as much as 15 cm (6 inches), raising concerns about localized flooding.
As of 1500GMT, Tropical Storm Jerry's center was located approximately 225 kilometers (140 miles) north of the northern Leeward Islands and 1,350 km (840 miles) south of Bermuda. Maximum sustained winds remain near 85 km/h (53 mph), with tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 295 km (183 miles) east of the center.
The NHC indicated that the storm is moving northwest at 26 km/h (16.2 mph), and no significant change in strength is expected over the next few days.
Authorities are advising residents and tourists in affected areas to remain vigilant, avoid coastal areas, and monitor local weather updates for the latest advisories.
