Tropical Storm Jerry triggers life-threatening surf throughout Caribbean
“Swells generated by Jerry are affecting the Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico, and are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions,” the NHC in Miami said in a statement.
The storm’s swells are forecast to reach the rest of the Greater Antilles over the next two nights, bringing heightened coastal dangers.
Heavy rainfall is already impacting parts of the Leeward Islands, the British and US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The center cautioned that these downpours “could result in flash flooding, particularly in urban areas and in steep terrain.”
Rainfall estimates suggest Barbuda could receive between 10 and 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches), while 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 in) are expected across the rest of the Leeward and Virgin Islands. Puerto Rico may see 5 to 10 cm, with localized areas possibly receiving up to 15 cm, according to the statement.
As of 1500 GMT, the storm’s center was positioned approximately 225 kilometers (140 miles) north of the northern Leeward Islands and 1,350 km (840 mi) south of Bermuda.
Maximum sustained winds remain near 85 kilometers per hour (53 mph), with tropical-storm-force winds extending outward up to 295 kilometers (183 miles) from the center. The agency said Jerry is expected to maintain its current strength as it continues moving northwest at around 26 kilometers per hour (16 mph).
